Dr. Manjarrez is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and the Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine since December 2015, having served in an interim capacity in the same role since January 2013. He served also Associate Chief Medical Officer for the University of Miami Hospital. He graduated from the University of California School of Medicine in San Diego and then completed a Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. After graduation, he co-founded one of the first Med-Peds hospitalist groups in the US. He completed a Faculty Development Program in General Internal Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill as well as received advanced training in Quality Improvement at the Institute for Healthcare Research at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City. He was previously the medical director for Hospital Medicine at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami for 5 years. He served as Sylvester’s Patient Safety Officer and Sylvester received a Health Grades Award for Patient Safety in August of 2013 during his term. He previously co-directed the Hospital Medicine Residency Track for the Internal Medicine Residency. Locally, he completed his 3 year term as President of the South Florida Chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine in June 2016. Nationally, he has served on multiple committees of the Society of Hospital Medicine and is the founding Chairman for International Hospitalists Section. He was Course Director for the flagship SHM Annual Meeting in March 2015 for over 3,000 of America’s 50,000 hospitalists. He is part of the multi-centered team that won the Innovation of the Year at that meeting for identifying the characteristics of top performing hospitals in glycemic control of hospitalized patients. He was recently named one of the section editors for clinical content for SPARK, the Society of Hospital Medicine’s new product for the preparation of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Examination for the Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine.
His professional interests are the quality improvement, handoff of hospitalized patients, perioperative cardiac care, and medical education.
